On March 01.03.2021st, XNUMX Fabian Moline submitted the following Question (21.7019) at the Federal Council:

2022 Winter Olympics in the People's Republic of China: Business as usual despite genocide?

Question: The Winter Olympics will take place in China in February 2022.

- Will the Federal Council send a representation to the major event despite the crimes against humanity in Xinjiang Province or is it prepared to forego it?

- How does he intend to use the occasion to improve the human rights situation?

Is he in contact with the IOC about this?

- Does he think that Olympia 08 had a positive impact on the human rights situation on site?

Nicolas Walder also submitted one on March 01.03.2021st, XNUMX Question (21.7015) to the Olympic Games:

Call for a boycott of the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing: what does the Federal Council intend to do?

Question: The calls for a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics are getting louder. Given the rampant repression in China, many consider it inappropriate to attend a sporting event in a country responsible for outright genocide in Xinjiang.

- Does the Federal Council intend to be represented at this event in Beijing?

- Does the Federal Council require assurances that Swiss athletes can express themselves safely on the human rights situation in China?

The Federal Council's answer to both questions was as follows:

Switzerland is committed to ensuring that human rights in sport are respected at all levels and that the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights are applied at major sporting events. Switzerland participated in the establishment of the Center for Sport and Human Rights in Geneva in collaboration with international sports organizations, athletes, states, sponsors, NGOs and other international bodies. She is still committed to upholding human rights at major sporting events. The situation in China regarding freedom of expression, privacy, minority rights and pressure on human rights defenders has deteriorated in recent years. The Federal Council will deal with the question of the official representation of China at the Olympic Games in 2022 at a later date.
