About 30 Tibetans have been arrested in the Kardze region in the former Kham Province of Tibet for celebrating the Dalai Lama's birthday on July 6th. The names of only 2 arrested persons are known; they are Kunchok Tashi and a Tibetan woman named Dzapo, both around 40 years old. The arrested are said to be members of a group that shared pictures and videos on social media and asked for prayers for the Dalai Lama. All communication channels in the region were blocked and monitoring measures were implemented.
In 2016, 10 Tibetans celebrating the Dalai Lama's birthday were sentenced to prison terms of up to 14 years. Eight years ago, several Tibetans who had gathered for a birthday party on the holy mountain, Make Pomra in Tawu in the eastern Tibetan province of Kardze, were killed by security forces shooting at the unarmed society.
