Tibetan horse racing festival canceled - 110 Tibetans fined

After the celebrations for the Holy Month of Saga Dawa in May and the Shotön Festival in August, the traditional horse race in Nagqu, which was supposed to take place from August 13th to 20th, has now been canceled. This festival with numerous accompanying programs around the horse race is one of the most important events in northern Tibet. Here too, the measure was justified with the pandemic. The rejection was linked to the retroactive ban on sending photos or videos about the preparations.

In this context, Tibetans were called to a meeting on August 9, where their cell phones were removed and searched. Police officers then read the names of 110 Tibetans who were taken to the police station and received large fines. They then had to report there once a week. One person concerned pointed out that the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party was being celebrated with great pomp at almost the same time, where there were apparently no concerns about the pandemic.
