China bans Tibetan language from videos and electronic media

According to a decree on "The dissemination of religious information services on the Internet", the use of Tibetan and Uyghur languages in these media has been banned since March 1st. The ban not only affects videos, but also media such as the online learning platform Talkmate and the streaming service Bilibili. As early as November 2021, both services had apparently temporarily blocked content in Tibetan voluntarily or in anticipation of the decree. Back then, messages like "...temporarily blocked" or "This comment contains sensitive information" were automatically displayed.

The ban on the Tibetan language that has now been decreed also affects artists who convey their performances via electronic media. If a performance is broadcast in Tibetan language, or if Tibetan culture and tradition are presented, the user account will be deleted immediately. Live broadcast performances are immediately interrupted.

According to a government decree of December 20, a state license has been required for foreign individuals or organizations to convey religious content within China.
